Custom Comment Types – Facebook Comments etc.

There are a number of services that pull comments into WordPress (Chat Catcher, for example). WordPress has comment types for ‘comments’ and ‘trackbacks/pingbacks’. Are there any current projects underway that implement custom comment types? I have a user who would like to display Comments, Trackbacks, and ‘Comments from Service X’ on his posts.
