If enabled, Really Simple SSL will redirect all pages on your site to https. You should see the URL starting with https, and a lock before the URL.

If this is not the case, you might need to activate the .htaccess redirect to SSL in settings/ssl. This redirect will work even if the default redirect does not work, for example because of caching.

If I’m not mistaken you can turn off https on a given post. I want to make sure the rel=”canonical” is correct, so I need to check if a post with a given ID should be https or http for rel=”canonical”. Thanks.

With Really Simple SSL this is not possible: the plugin will enable SSL for the entire site. Two possible solutions: manual configuration or a dedicated plugin: https://really-simple-ssl.com/knowledge-base/disabling-ssl-for-one-page-only/
