2.8 Great Update! Syntax highlighing, not so great

Please accept my apologies for my last post.

I know the editor project is of value to a lot of folks, and many people like it as evidenced by posts in this forum. Unfortunately, for me it was like buying a new car and having the cruise moved from the steering wheel to its own stick below the wheel. It will just take some getting used to.

I’m using WordPress as a CMS and haven’t found any better. WordPress is a great thing. I always find myself modifying things and WordPress has been the best for easy configurations and code additions.

I hope in future versions I’ll be able to turn off the highlighting feature. I do that to all my text editors, its not a WordPress thing.

I’m also wondering if it’s possible to disable the syntax highlighting features.

I don’t really mind the actual syntax highlighting, it’s just the auto-completion and indenting features that I would rather not have.

Could it be possible to do this with a plugin or what?

Okay, figured it out. All you need to do is go to your theme editor, click the “Screen Options” tab at the top right, and click “Disable syntax highlighting” and that’s it.

It’s not working on all of my blogs. On the newer clean install it seems to work fine, but on some every time I click the turn off link, it reloads the page with the default item for the editor (ie Theme – style).

Then when I click on the page I want to edit the dumb thing gets loaded again… Anyone else having this problem?

Doh! clear cache and reboot fixes problem

I have a similar problem. Compared to WordPress 2.7.1 you have added a new function in WordPress 2.8 for the Dashboard panel: Appearance-> Editor.

In WP 2.7.1 the code in the editor was just a plain text file. In 2.8, a JavaScript (I believe) for syntax higlighting has been added. When I go to that page and click to edit on the rather large Header.PHP file for my theme Atahualpa, the browser freezes for more than a minute before the JavaScript is done loading and sometimes the browser crashes completely. That problem I can live with but the total disaster is that the script also randomly refuses to accept my edits.

This is a strong indication that the syntax macro is badly coded and inefficient.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT WORDPRESS MAKES THIS MACRO AN OPTION IN WP 2.8.1 AND HAVE IT DEACTIVATED AS DEFAULT, ALLOWING THE USERS TO TURN IT ON INSTEAD.

(In that way, the acute problem is solved, and the macro can be improved without time pressure.)
