• I experienced the same increase in spam inquiries since upgrading to v3 keys. However, I had left the [recaptcha] tag in place but have since removed it.

On this page, it says, “If [recaptcha] form-tags are found in a form template, Contact Form 7 5.1 or higher ignores them and replaces them with an empty string.”.

I don’t know what this means but I wonder if leaving it in place renders it useless.

I have removed the tag and hope that works.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks. I used to still get spam inquiries come through and I had reCAPTCHA v2, honeypot, and a quiz installed, but Russians still got through.

I was about to go to Akismet protection with v3 then found these threads! Good to know I am not alone.

I wonder if Ninja or Gravity Forms are better solutions.

Your website looks good, you provide some good services there.

    Thanks again.

The Akismet protection only works partially. Switching to the other form providers is a solution, but those both have very sketchy security histories. Editing the code is the answer if you are comfortable with that. I hate it when a plugin developer drops the ball on something like this. I suspect this will be fixed very soon.

I agree but won’t switch just yet. These storms tend to find the developer who then jumps on a fix (7.5.1 was released a few days ago so he has not disappeared).

The same thing happened with NextGen Galleries.

I have informed my client who received many spam inquiries so at least, they know I am working on it.

Thanks again, Andy. I see you provide email marketing services – do you do a lot and need any help? I am in Vancouver.
