What is the protocol for derivative Plugins?

  • So there’s a plugin that I’ve found here on the WordPress site, and it offers some of the functionality that I’m looking for, but there are some features and features that I would like to add or improve.

    I’d like to take the plugin as a starting point, then improve it, and offer my improvements to the community. What’s the protocol here?
