I have been using for years – I updated the plugin today and got this error message:

“the plugin wordpress-seo/wp-seo.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist.”

WP Rollback does not work because Yoast is completely gone and when I try to reinstall, I get this error:

“Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.”

What is the solution to this?
Do I loose all my SEO descriptions through the years trying to fix this error of theirs?

If the plugin does not appear in the plugin dashboard, you likely have a missing or corrupt Yoast plugin file. Please delete the Yoast plugin’s folder via FTP and install a fresh copy of the plugin.

Also, there is CLEARLY something wrong with the update – a bug or something….

No, you would not lose the optimizations you created using the plugin as those are stored in your WordPress database and are separate from the plugin files.

?If you received an error that the ‘destination folder already exists’ during the plugin installation, that would indicate that either the plugin is already installed or that something went wrong during the installation which caused the plugin’s folder to be created but that it’s files are incomplete. If you cannot install the plugin in the standard fashion due to that error, as a workaround you can also perform a manual update of the plugin. We have instructions on how to upgrade the plugin manually at the following link: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp. You will need an FTP program such as FileZilla and your FTP details, which can be obtained from your host provider.
