I understand the Gutenberg concept: An editor view that as closely as possible displays the look of the final page in real time as it is being edited.

The concept is appealing, but Gutenberg’s execution relies heavily on flawed UI mechanics. Invisible hover/click points are ridiculously unintuitive. Gutenberg has hover/click points and menus that behave differently at different block levels with no visible differentiation until the user starts clicking. It’s bad design, and it only get’s worse as a page increases in complexity.

A good UI is self explanatory. Even if a user makes a mistake, or clicks the wrong button, a good UI makes it quickly apparent. Gutenberg does none of this. It’s Downtown Metropolis with no street signs.

I’ll leave you with this video discussing the proper design of what is probably the most basic UI that exists: a door.

    Gutenberg is a bad door.

To add my voice into the un-listening void: I HATE hidden menus, first they have to be known to look for, they take extra clicks to use, then they disappear and have to be re-invoked to make any changes. YUCK ??

Yep, I just don’t understand how this is the design that made it past all the checks. Invisible menus. Invisible click points. It’s terrible design 101.

For the record, I’m all for a visual page designer for WordPress. I use 3rd party page designers all the time. Most of the one’s I’ve used, I liked. I like Gutenberg’s concept and basic workflow…

    It’s just that UI.

I think what annoys me most how avoidable this disaster is. It’s 2018. UI design principals are not a new thing. They teach classes on it. They have professionals that specialize in it.

How did this make it out of the door?
