• When updating themes or plugins, I used to get the screen that says, to summarize, “Enabling Maintenance Mode… updating… reactivating… complete.”

However, lately it stops halfway through.

The only way I know it actually updated the item is to go to some other part of the dashboard, which refreshes the notification or, better, to go look at the current version number.

    I’m using WP 4.9.8.

  • Hmm… I tried to help someone last week who was having a similar issue. After trying everything in the book, he had thought that it came down to a parsing error within PHP, and the issue had only started after the 4.9.8 update. I’m unable to replicate, but this thread has the rundown of what we discussed and things to try/look into.

He was using LightSpeed for hosting – any chance this is the same hosting provider you have? If so, it may be something they need to look into.

This may also be a bug within 4.9.8, but it’s been difficult to nail down exactly what is causing it. I found one open ticket logged in Make WordPress Core that points to a similar issue, but from a couple of years ago… Here’s one: Plugin Update Never Finishes.

In conclusion, I’m not sure whether any of this will truly help, just wanted you to know you’re not alone in this.

Thank you for the info. I don’t use LightSpeed, but MediaServe for hosting (been with them over a decade).

I don’t recall having this issue until WP 4.9.8, so it may be a bug since nothing on the server changed.
