    WordPress tries to automatically recognize smiley sequences and convert them into images…this mechanism should exclude sourcecode from any transformations but there is currently a bug within WordPress core which causes all smiley sequences to be converted into images.

    you can disable this mechanism by changing the use_smilies in /wp-admin/options.php to 0 – this affects all your pages – smileys wont work anymore
