Hi, so first off I have to say I am still pretty new to all of this and still learning so my apologies if I don’t use a lot of the technical terms for things.

I was working on a page for my site today when i noticed that most of the icons in the admin bar (during a preview as well as live page) and icons in my menu had all been replaced with empty squares. I wanted to make sure that I checked and tested as much as I could on my own before posting here, one, to see if I could fix it myself and learn something new, and two, to be able to provide as much information as possible to anyone who can help. Following are the steps I tried in fixing this:

Checked to make sure that Dashicons and Font Awesome fonts were all enqueing properly and that their folders were located in the correct places on the server, and that all links to said folders were correct. Everything there checked out fine.

I then began inspecting and testing the code of the page to see if there were any error being reported that would relate to the issue…none were found.

Once I was sure the coding was fine, I checked the pages in all the browsers I had available, being Chrome, Edge and IE for Windows, and Safari and Chrome for Mac (all updated to latest versions with caches cleared) Issue persisted through all the browsers.

I also made sure that caching was disabled on my server

I then began disabling plugins to see if I could narrow down if there was a conflict, starting with optimizing and security plugins, then clearing all caches and re-loading the pages after each deactivation. No change, until I deactivated the UPG plugin, then all the icons came back.

To make sure, I then disabled the remaining plugins, to make sure everything looked ok and to have just the WordPress core running, and after clearing caches again, enabled UPG and tested and sure enough, the icons became the empty squares again.

At this point, I do not know what else to try, and I am open to any suggestions. Thanks.

While awaiting a response I proceeded to look and see if there was anything else I could do as a test, and decided to try a few things out using a clean/fresh WP install. I then copied my plugins over, leaving them deactivated. I enabled UPG, current version, and it worked fine. I then began to test it alongside other plugins until the issue reappeared, which it did when I enabled my pop up maker (I use for my various forms and such) If they are both active, the issue is there, if either is deactivated, the issue goes away. while I am left then still not knowing which one is at fault, I can with certainty say those two will not play well with each other. I will await the developers response and see if any new information is available.

    It is definitely a conflict.
Either with other plugins or active theme.

You have done lots of ways, also try by changing theme.

Thank you for reporting issue. I will definitely look for it.

Thanks for getting back to me. Here’s the link to the popup plugin. I tried reverting back to the regular twenty-seventeen theme, and it still persisted. Weird thing is that by themselves, both plugins work great, with no issues, and I couldn’t find anything obviously wrong with either of them. I prefer your plugin, so I have switched to a different popup one for now that works just fine. Thanks again for looking into this, take your time and let me know if you figure anything out, or if there is anything else I can do to help.

Not sure why this was marked as resolved as the issue is still unknown and not fixed, but regardless, please let me know what you find out, and I will be posting this same information to the other plugins support forum to see if they have any ideas as well.

Tested by installing popup-maker.1.7.30.zip and UPG latest on clean install or latest wordpress.
No issues found and non of the icons at front & backend found to be square.

In next version, I will update font-awesome version at UPG, hope that may fix your issues.
By the way that popup plugin is not using fontawesome.

Thanks for replying again. So weird that this happens, I will keep trying things on my end to figure it out. I am glad that there are no issues with your plugin though, I haven’t found anything else that does what it does and as easy. I’ll check with the other plugins devs and see if they have anything to advise on their end. thanks again, and have a wonderful day.

Just installed the latest version of the popup plugin (was released 10 hours ago) and the issue seems resolved. So maybe was just some weird conflict in the coding of the previous versions that was changed in this one. Anyway, thanks for all the help and support in getting this figured out.

My apologies for having to reopen this topic, but as it turns out the issue is still there. I have no idea why it did not present itself right away, but regardless, it is there. Again, when both plugins are active, the icons turn into empty squares, disabling one or both of the plugins resolves this. As a final test, i used three different browsers on two separate machines to view the site. issue appeared across everything, and was immediately solved by disabling either plugin. While I do not believe there are an errors in either plugin as they both function perfectly fine, for me they simply cant be used together. To be safe at this time until something is figured out I will be leaving both disabled and finding other options. I have attached a pic of the issue for reference.

While waiting for an update I did some more testing, and can now conclusively say the issue is a conflict between the two plugins. I have been able to not only recreate the exact issue, but using basic, standard steps supported by each plugin, can reproduce the issue over and over. The steps to do so are as follows:

After both plugins are installed and setup, use the popup maker to create popups for the Post Image and Post video forms (linking page or directly using shortcode doesn’t matter, both have the same result). The popups don’t need to be assigned to a menu, or even used, just creating one of them will cause the blank square icon issue, and deleting the popup will immediately correct it.

As I said, its not a case of one plugin working and the other not, both are doing their job just fine…just neither will work together in their intended fashion together.

Hope this helps in some way.

Since it has been three days now with no new responses, I took it upon myself to do some more testing, and with the help of the popup plugins developers I was able to narrow down a more specific action that causes the issue. the issue only occurs when using the popup plugin to create a popup of the image and video upload forms (whether using the page or shortcode issue is the same). the popups do not need to be assigned to the menu or used, just creating them is enough to trigger the issue. It only happens when using those two forms. And yes, the popup plugin does not use FontAwesome fonts, but through testing with them, it happens regardless of the font package use, i tested with dashicons an genericons as well and the same thing occurred. Also, it seems that while the issue may occasionally not occur on some pages, It will always happen on the UPG Main Gallery page. Anyway, I will continue to wait for a bit and see if you have any new information, and if this cannot be resolved, I am afraid I will just have to abandon both plugins and find some alternative, as difficult as that will be.

New version 1.65, FontAwesome pack is updated to latest version. This is only the responsible file to deal with icons.
Before and now still I don’t see any conflicts and works fine together.

Anyway, we try our best so that it works fine on clean installation of WordPress. For the conflict we can try roughly look into it but cannot go deep inside of other’s plugin.

From our end, everything is fine and no more action is required for it.
If you still need further assistant, mail to pupup maker.

    Thank you for notifying us.

I just updated to the latest version of UPG on my live site, issue persists. Per the information you mentioned, I decided to, again, create a clean install on localhost server, latest version of WordPress, your plugin and the popup one. No other plugins installed, just those two. And everything using it’s default install settings. And yes, everything works just fine when they are installed and activated next to each other. As I mentioned, the issue is when they are used together. If I create a popup using your shortcode for either the image or video post, or if I just link to the page content, the issue appears. No other shortcode or content causes this issue, only yours. As for the other developer, I have actually been in daily contact with them since I first mentioned it to you, they have been actively exploring all options, including downloading and testing out your plugin to find the conflict, I had hoped you might be just as interested to find the cause, or at least definitively rule out your plugin or shortcode. At this point I feel this as basic a setup as I can possibly get to show that the conflict between the two exists, and that testing needs to be done by both parties to find the issue, if you are concerned in doing so, whether you do or not is up to you. As you say, they work just fine with everything else I’ve tried, unfortunately for me, i require them both and am only one person requesting a fix to this issue rather than a large user base. What you do is up to you, I will continue working with the other plugin devs, and if you do need something from me, you can let me know.

You may mark this as resolved if you like, I’ll not bother you anymore with this, and if I am able to get results or information on my own I will make sure to forward it along to you for your information. Thanks again for the help you were able to provide, and have a great day.
