Tracking Links to Outbound Sites

I’m looking for a way to track clicks on outbound links. I’m not looking to track affiliate links, email campaigns or the sort. I want to track links to articles on other sites. Something like this:

https://mysite.com url:their site.com/article.html

The outbound links would then appear in Google Analytics under the “Events” tab.

I want to avoid Google Tag Manager, since it is a resource hog and drags down pagespeed.
