I have Wordfence running on many sites on a sever, there has been a large increase in the disk % usage of this server recently. After further investigation I can see many sites with the following in the php error logs:

[29-Aug-2018 21:42:41 America/Chicago] Unable to open /home/example/public_html/wp-content/wflogs/config.php for reading and writing.

it seems that the permissions for the config file were at 600 instead of 644 but also in wp-admin GUI if I try to update the plugin I get this error:

Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.

however all dirs are at 755 and files at 644 as they always are, I am also able to update other plugins just fine.

EDIT: My apologies pleas ignore this, it seems that wp-content/plugins/wordfence dir was not owned by the correct user for some sites hence the permission errors.

    Please mark this as solved
