On Test Config in Postie settings:

    Connect to Mail Host
    Postie connection: sockets
    Postie protocol: imap-ssl
    Postie server: imap.gmail.com
    Postie port: 993
Unable to connect. The server said: There was an error connecting to the server Connection timed out

Running on Mac O/S Sierra, Gmail works correctly via browser.

Gmail set up as per Postie instructions. Imap is enabled.

Some hosts do not allow connecting to gmail, notably GoDaddy.

Here is the result from MAC O/S Terminal

    WFC:~ lew$ echo “TAG LOGOUT” | openssl s_client -connect imap.gmail.com:993
    CONNECTED(00000006)
    depth=1 C = US, O = Google Trust Services, CN = Google Internet Authority G3
verify error:num=20:unable to get local issuer certificate
    verify return:0

Is there any solution to the problem?

I have now changed from a gmail address to a different email host. Postie now works correctly.

So now my only problem is that I cannot use a gmail account with Postie.

unable to get local issuer certificate

This is the error that is preventing access to gmail and it is specific to your hosting environment. You will need to contact them to resolve this issue.
