Adding an HTML image viewer to NextGEN Gallery

    I think NextGEN Gallery is great, but i don’t like the javascript image viewer. That’s mainly because, even though it looks good, it’s useless from an SEO point of view. But also, it doesn’t allow you to easily add features to the image page.

    The non-javascript fallback isn’t an alternative, either, as there’s no caption or any option for anything other than just the raw image file. And, anyway, there doesn’t appear to be any way to switch of the js mode in the options.

    I’d like to extend NGG to be able to have the option of using a template based html page for displaying individual images in a gallery.

    I guess the best solution is to write a new plugin that uses the data and images from NGG but handles the display itself.

    I’d appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

  • I could not agree more.

    For all thing the NextGEN gallery does. It doesn’t do SEO and so I really don’t have any use of a flashy gallery that doesn’t have any search-ability.

    Well, i’ve got a working plain html-based front end plugin written now. It provides an html page for each image in the gallery and nice URLs, using the gallery name and the image’s file name (with the suffix stripped).

    I’ve still got quite a bit of work to do on it before it’s really usable by other people though, as it currently requires a bit of php knowledge to install it, as it’s not configurable through the control panel yet. Hopefully i’ll get that stuff sorted out over the next few weeks and it will be usable.

    Is there currently a way to have at least one raw image dispayed when the viewer doesn’t have flash installed and can’t see the ngg gallery?

    This is my wordpress site wwww.lizzyc.com.au I’d like at least something to be displayed on the front page and the galleries if flash isn’t installed.

    Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! My understanding of the technical stuff is basic, so please go slow!

    Hi Willkemp, just wondering if you made any progress with your plugin? It sounds exactly like what I’m looking for.
