Settings and label are confusing

  • The label and description for this checkbox (on the Settings > Writing screen) are very confusing and misleading.

    The setting is called Classic editor settings and the description says “Do not replace the editor. Add alternate links to the Posts and Pages screens for editing with the Classic editor”.

    This leads me to believe that if the checkbox is ticked, then the Classic Editor will not be replaced. This is the exact opposite of what it does though. When the Checkbox is ticked, if I click on a Page/Post title, it starts editing with the new Block Editor (Gutenberg). When the Checkbox is NOT ticked, that’s when I still get the Classic Editor.

    I would like to propose that you change the wording to something along the lines of “Replace Classic Editor with the new Block Editor. Add alternate links to the Posts and Pages screens for editing with the Classic editor.”

    Yeah, it is a bit confusing. The main problem is that the Classic Editor plugin is intended for use when Gutenberg will be part of core, not while it is still a plugin. So “Do not replace the editor” is about not replacing Gutenberg ??

    Hi! I closed the Gutenberg GitHub issue you opened because this support forum is indeed the correct place to file an issue specifically relevant to this plugin.

    For reference, the plugin mentions two possible modes:

    1/ Fully replaces the Gutenberg editor and restores the Edit Post template.

    2/ Adds alternate “Edit” links to the Posts and Pages screens, on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and in the admin menu. Using these links will open the corresponding post or page in the Classic Editor.

    I think you’re right that the current wording is a bit tricky! Here is my suggestion for an alternative:

    Current:

    Do not replace the editor. Add alternate links to the Posts and Pages screens for editing with the Classic editor.

    Proposed:

    Use the Block editor (Gutenberg) by default and include optional links back to the Classic editor.

    Thanks @designsimply, this sounds good. Also thinking to change that option from a checkbox to couple of radio buttons. That will make it very clear that one will replace Gutenberg, and the other will let people use the Classic editor as an option when editing.

    I’ve just updated the plugin and can see the new radio buttons with the improved text. That makes it clearer.
