woocommerce subcategory display issue

  • On my woocommerce shop page, categories are properly displayed.
    however, clicking on a category does not show the subcategories, but instead all the products within the subcategories are displayed at once.
    after some testing, this does work properly in the twenty-seventeen theme, but does not work on the hamilton theme correctly

    clicking on the ‘antique maps’ category should bring up a page with the subcategories displayed. instead, all the products are being displayed (and no subcategories).
