Comment field missing from pages but not posts

All of the sudden my comment fields are missing from my pages, but not my individual posts. I tried disabling each plugin to see if it was one of them, but to no avail.
I am also having trouble with my permalinks. I tried to change the the format under the Settings tab but it made all of my posts and pages unreachable with an error message.
Can anyone help?
some info: linux, wordpress 2.7.1, and I’m not an experienced techie so please be descriptive! ??
