In February the automatic update from 7.0 to 7.0.1 went awry; site couldn’t be loaded, visitors greeted with an error message (which I can’t remember/find now). This happened while I was travelling, so tried to sort it out while on a bus from an airport.

Found a forum post suggesting renaming the plugin folder and reinstall Wordfence (thought I had zipped the folder as well, but seems like I didn’t).

Since then I’ve had two installations of Wordfence on the site; one happily auto-updating and the other “frozen” on 7.0.1, nagging to be updated.

These double installs seem to be taking a toll on the memory limit at my host.

How do I safely remove/uninstall just the old version, without messing up the current one?

The old plugin version just renamed via ftp:

    Hi,

Can you delete the “wordfenceBROKEN” directory via FTP or your hosting control panel file manager.

Once that has been done go to the top of the “Diagnostics” tab on the Wordfence “Tools” page. There will be a “SEND REPORT BY EMAIL” button to send the diagnostics report. Enter phil [at] wordfence [dot] com as the email and @jonaz as the forum user please.

Once you have emailed me the diagnostics report can you reply to this topic to let me know that it has been sent. This is important in the unlikely event that your installation of WordPress is having an issue with sending mail.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply, @wfphil

Broken-folder deleted (and the old installation/version disappeared from the plugin-listing in the WP dashboard, now showing only the updated latest version).

    You’ve got mail!

    thanks

    Hi,

Thanks for sending the diagnostics report.

Please expand the “Basic Firewall Options” section on the “All Options” page.

Make sure that the “Protection Level” says “Extended Protection” and let me know.

    Thanks.
