When I go to categories, the Yoast inteface shows “slug”. I try to set my slug to be: /france/paris/getting-around-paris/, but it defaults to france-paris-getting-around-paris/.

What is the purpose of the slug? I thought it should match the URL.

A “slug” is the piece of the URL that distinguishes that post (or category). If that’s been used already, you can no longer use it in another post or category.

Hi, I have read the article, but I am confused this slug vs the typical URL ending? My categories have parents. So France/Paris/post-name. But, is this intended to be another URL name added, such as domain.com/optimized-post-name?

My main issue, is that this creates additional URLs.

I have corrected my slugs via yoast to show France/Paris/things-to-do/post-name, but now, the following URL still exist: /things-to-do. This will become an issue when I have other countries with the same subcategory. Is there a way to disable the slug from yoast? The regular wordpress way is what I need.

You can always use the native WordPress slug edit option instead of the Yoast SEO slug edit feature if you’d like.

How do I revert to the wordpress only option? I want to keep Yoast for other stuff, but is there a setting to disable slug?

You can just make sure to edit the WordPress slug under the title whenever you edit a post or page. Once you click on ‘OK’, the slug in the Yoast SEO meta box will just follow suit with what you’ve updated.

it doesn’t give me an option for the category page. If I get premium, will support look into this on my site and in the dashboard?

Once you have the Yoast SEO Premium subscription, you will have access to the premium support. Our support engineers will be happy to investigate this issue further.
