• I’m really getting into the whole website thing. I have seen some WordPress blogs with “blog.example.com”. Is there a way I can get a free domain name like that for my blog? I am a Blogspot user and they would give you “example.blogspot.com”.

    Thank you,
    Joe

  • I would not recommend free web hosts with self-hosted WordPress (slow performance, framing, ad injection, and other problems). There are inexpensive domain registrars and web hosts out there.

I’m actually using my own computer as host. This is more of a learning experience at the moment so I can get familiar with things. I’m not looking for a host, just a free domain name with blog in it. I am using a free domain name off of DynDNS but they aren’t very good.

Just register a domain seperately, you have control over where it points…

No more than 10 bucks for a year or two….

I know this already, but is there no way I can get a free domain name like Blogspot gives you. I thought blog.example.com had to do with WordPress, guess I was wrong?

well, you can go sign up for a hosted blog at WordPress.com I guess.

But for the self-hosters running software from here at WordPress.org? No, no free domain names given to you by WP.

    blog.example.com is a sub-domain, not a free domain name.

if you know, why are you asking? you cant get a free domain name. theyre bought.

    village-idiot.org == domain name, bought.

sbultra.village-idiot.org == sub-domain (can be free if I were so inclined; im not)

If you just want a wordpress blog, and dont have a domain name, look into wordpress.com

Oh I meant sub domain. Sorry I wasn’t sure what the difference as, now I know. I downloaded wordpress and am hosting it myself, but signed up on wordpress.com and it just gave me another wordpress with example.wordpress.com, but I want that for the wordpress I am hosting :/ I am so confused.

I am so fustrated. All I want to do is make my site vewibale on the itnernet, instead of it being localhost. I made a subdomain on dyndns and it asks me to login again, but my login wont work.

All that did was screw up my site again. It wont log in if its not localhost.

If you really want to host it on your computer, one thing to keep in mind is for it to be viewable all the time, your computer must be powered on 24/7. So if that’s the case, you’re not looking for hosting, just a free subdomain. Domains cost money, but the people who own them can make subdomains, and they can let people use them for free if they like. This is exactly what DynDNS is for, since I also assume you have a dynmaic public IP, and DynDNS will keep track of it and make sure the subdomain always resolves to your server. I like the .gotdns.com one, its easy to remember but .blogsite.org would also be good. DynDNS owns gotdns.com, and blogsite.org, so they let people use the subdomains of it.

But first, do you have a router? If you do, that means you need DynDNS to point to your public IP, the router’s IP (you can find it out on whatismyip.com), and then you need to forward port 80 to your computer’s port 80. Port 80 is always used for websites, if you didn’t use that then the user would have to type in for example website.com:37. You probably also use DHCP, so first you have to give your computer a local IP that won’t change, outside of the range of address that DHCP assigns. Than you can forward port 80 to your computer’s local IP’s port 80.

If you don’t have a router, than the DynDNS needs to point to your computer’s public IP address, and make sure the firewall allows access to port 80.
