For the second time in several months, commenters have told me they’ve been prevented from publishing comments with the error “invalid security token.” I’ve followed the directions and submitted the debug report to Jetpack via e mail. But the debug test said Jetpack was working fine.

I use three comment-related plugins, none of which are listed as conflicting with Jetpack or Akismet: FV Thoughtful COmments, Subscribe to Comments, and Bulk Comment Manager.

  • @richards1052 Do you know if these visitors were commenting with their Facebook, Twitter or WordPress.com account?

We have seen this error on occasion when other comments plugins are active. Could you temporarily disable those other plugins to see if that prevents this error from appearing?

If that doesn’t fix it, can you please use Jetpack’s Debugger module to send us some more information about your site?

    1. Go to the Jetpack page in your dashboard.
    2. Click on the Debug link appearing at the bottom of the page.
    3. Click the link that says “click here to contact Jetpack support.”
    4. Fill in the description box and your name and email address.
    5. Click the “Contact Support” button to send us the debug results privately. It’s best not to post this information on public forums, as it contains private details about your site.

    Thanks!

The commenter who received the error responded to me that he accessed my site from Facebook. I don’t have any site registration. So I’m not sure commenters would need to log in using Facebook, Twitter, or WP.com. But I at least know that he came to my site from Facebook.

I pasted the result of the debug test into a message I sent via e mail to the Support address listed 2 days ago. Haven’t heard back.

The problem with deactivating the plugins is that I only know when the error has happened when a commenter tells me. It never happens to me. And I presume that most commenters getting such an error would not bother to tell me. One individual who is a friend does tell me when it happens to him. And he’s informed me of the error twice in the past few months or so. So it appears it is a scattershot matter as far as I can tell. It is very hard to test this out since it doesn’t appear to be a regular phenomenon.

What someone should do on your end is install those three plugins and test it out on your end. You probably have more technical tools at hand than I do to see the results my commenters are seeing.
