This is not a problem but rather a question. I want to change our main site, from Ithemes Builder Seo and Google XML Sitemaps to Yoast only. I did this on another site and when I activated the Yoast plugin it told me to deactivate Google Sitemaps to avoid conflicts with multiple sitemaps. In search console for that site, https://www.alabamaexpungementattorneys.com this other site – only one sitemap appears and it appears to be the old one since it appears to have all the indexing so it looks like Yoast didn’t create one.

My question: When I add this plugin to our site and deactivate Google XML Sitemaps, what happens to the sitemap that’s already there? The site is several years old and the Google sitemap has most of the pages indexed. Will I loose all indexing? Should I delete the old sitemap?

    Thanks Much

    Mike

It is recommended to only use one sitemap plugin and not multiple to prevent conflicts. Once you install and activate Yoast SEO, a new XML sitemap will generate for you that will include all of your posts, pages, and any other content types URLs from your site. You’ll then need to remove your old sitemap and submit the new sitemap to your Google Search Console property.

By replacing the sitemap to Google Search Console, you won’t lose any rankings as the sitemap helps search engines to crawl a site efficiently.

Thank you for you quick response – I’ve never done this before. You said to submit the new sitemap – then delete the old – each from search console. The Yoast plugin has been activated but I don’t see either the old submitted sitemap or new sitemap created by Yoast in the https://www.alabamaexpungementattorneys.com/ folder. Can I add another sitemap to Search Console even if the actual yoast sitemap is not in that folder? Same question for deleting the old sitemap in search console even though I don’t see that one in the folder either.

If you have the time to answer these questions I think that will help understand how this works and complete my questions.

Again – Thank you so much for taking the time to help

@mlhwebsites When we say delete the old sitemap, we are referring to deleting the old sitemap in Google Search Console, not actually removing the file from your site’s files/folders. As for locating the sitemap in your site’s directories, you won’t be able to find it that way as the sitemap is created dynamically upon request, so it won’t show as a file your site’s root directory when viewing it through a file manager or FTP for example.
