• I moved blog from one server to another. Didn’t read any instructions before hand (I know, not very smart), so I just copied all of the posts off of the old server and added them to the new server. The new server (on GoDaddy) installed WP and I reselected the theme. Now I need to get the 6 months worth of posts and comments to show on the blog.

Since I didn’t export the posts off of the old server, I don’t think I use the import function. Right? So how do I reconnect the blog to it’s posts?

    Thank you for your help!

How? You copied posts from the database or did you copy .php files from your WordPress directory?

For reference, have a look at Moving_WordPress in the docs section.

    Lots of .php files.

Do you still have access to the original server? Does it have phpMyAdmin (or something similar) so that you can do a db backup?

Yes, it looks like I still have access to the old server. Am I supposed to export the database?

You should check that link I gave you a couple days ago ??

But yeah, all your posts are in that database. You’ll want that if you want the posts (and pages, categories, pages, etc.).

Thanks, Chris_K. I read through the link you set up, but I’m a bit confused. I have an export of the database in .XML format, but I don’t think that the format it should be in. Right?

Hard to say. How did you generate said export? If it is a WordPress WXR export then you can pull it straight into the new blog.

    I used phpMyAdmin to export.

voassistant, if you exported your old database already, here’s a video we have on how to restore your WordPress database.

Should do the trick for you.

Is that what you were looking for?

Thanks, WpBlogHost. That did help a bit.

I tried importing the .sql file but get this error.

#1044 – Access denied for user ‘***_Blog’@’%’ to database ‘***_***blog’

Do I need to edit the file before moving it to the new server?

sounds like user “***_Blog” is either using a bad password or doesn’t have access to the ‘***_***blog” database, right?

Presumably your host could help you sort out DB users and databases to get that import rolling ??

Thank you for all your help!

After fixing the password issues, there was a new error . . . “unable to create database; database already exists”

After reading through GoDaddy’s knowledge base, I found this information:

“It is unnecessary to include a CREATE DATABASE line in your MySQL database, and if present can even cause your import to fail. If your database includes this line, remove it before uploading the database to your hosting account.”

After deleting the Create Database line in the .sql file, the database imported and the blog is now up.
