    To illustrate the point:
    https://universal-nexus.com all is perfect
https://sandbox.universal-nexus.com is a snapshot for screwing around with new themes and weird plugins.
There’re other subdimains all handled via WPMU, all share this issue.

History: this isn’t the first time this has happened. Normally I would replace one of three Mod_Rewite code blocks with one of the other two and magical fixing would occur until the next time (usually at least a full year would go by) when I’d have to tweak it again. The rewrite rules were little different from each other and copy/paste from solutions found back when the issue first cropped up … which possibly predates WP3.0

This time nothing works. Even nuking .htaccess and letting WP write a new one.

?Yes WP and all plugins fully updated.
?Yes have tried disabling every plugin.
?Yes the permissions are fine and, in fact, if I go to an entry in the Media Library (which is a lot of boxes with ? in the middle) then select Edit, the full size image loads and I man crop/resize/etc. Saving change doesn’t fix anything.
New & old alike are impacted – adding an image to a post right now swallowed it into this strange black hole.

Obviously the frustration now is in knowing this is fixable but being unable to stumble on the right sorcery to resolve it (never mind that this is a recurring issue, but I got rid of a caching plugin that MAY have been partially to blame).

This is also the longest I’ve gone unable to dig up a solution: over 1yr my sub-sites have been broken(low traffic, sadly … but space opera isn’t a happening genre these days). If I have to delete my install, import my posts from a copy onto a virgin WP install & SQL I can, it’s just such a royal pain especially with no guarantee that this issue won’t return down the line I prefer to know I’ve eliminated any other choice.

Oh. Forgot to mention: theme specific images aren’t affected … this time.

Themes with custom image options (backgrounds, headers, etc) custom is generally going to break (and seems to in this instance). Default theme items usually are NOT affected (though it has happened, this is one of the typical default-okay times)

    So, I solved what.
All of my media URLs have … well … crap in them.

    Screenshot

That i[x].wp.com garbage isn’t supposed to be there. And, to be perfectly honest I don’t know where it came from.

Until the course of beginning this update post I had intended to see if I couldn’t scrub it from the SQL, but now I realise it’s hiding somewhere else because this ends up being immediately applied to new media too. So it’s hiding in a PHP file somewhere, maybe???

I mean if it’s a code issue, at least easier to do a SEARCH & locate the lunacy, but I’m hoping anyone has any insight on the how/why so I can better avoid this or as a warning to others.

    Thanks

So after nearly two years of trying to fix it I finally decided that the issue was a corrupted WP install.

Sure enough deleting the WP core files and reinstalling … pointing back to the SQLdB and reinserting thr blogs.dir folder and uploads … boom all fixed.

    Go figure
