Thanks for reaching out. I haven’t heard of Hostgator saying that before but they are entitled to their opinion. I’d argue that it’s more of a problem of Hostgator not wanting to give you access the resources they promised you when you bought the hosting but that’s a question better asked of them. One thing I have noticed is that occasionally with hosting company support it all depends on which support rep you get as to what they tell you. You may get rep A who doesn’t like a certain plugin while rep B loves it. I tend to take their advice with a grain of salt as the first level guys seem to be interested in blaming things other than their hosting. I would be hesitant to say Hostgator as a company say ‘don’t install wordfence’.
There are several ways to lower resource usage built in to the plugin (“Use low resource scanning”, entering 9-20 in the scan option “Maximum execution time for each scan stage”, set “Update interval in seconds” to something like 10, disable Live Traffic unless you’re looking at it, etc).
Lastly, this forum is only for free users and we are not allowed to discuss premium functions or offerings here. None of this is premium only so I don’t think we’re breaking any rules here. I just wanted to let you know in case you asked a follow up about a premium question.
Hope this has helped. As a premium user you have access to https://support.wordfence.com and you can ask any questions, especially premium functionality ones, there.
