• Me: Not a professional web-designer but not a complete newbie to it.

I’d like to be able to learn how to do my own theme, but if it’s something that is very time consuming I would probably prefer to give it a miss. I’m not looking to build a masterpiece or anything though, something quite basic would be fine. I can always add to it at a later time.

So my question is would you think it’s better for me to learn how to do my own Theme or would it be better to just play around with a couple of existing themes and tweak them instead of trying to reinvent the wheel?

There are enough good, GPL, themes out there that I’m not sure why anyone would need to build one from scratch, unless they just enjoyed doing it and wanted to. I would open a few and play around with them…seems to me that’s a good way to learn…works for me anyway. Good luck.

    Hello,

I would do exactly as Mr Figaro said…look for a similar to what you are looking for (looks wise), and then, check also for flexibility, that is widget ready, that handles Photos and Galleries well, that is written in an organized manner and style…etc
The only way to know, it is “taking it for a test drive” within your site backend.

    Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I’ll go with taking different themes for a test drive then and find which one is a best match and do a few tweaks if needed.
