It sounds like what you’re experiencing is normal behaviour within BNFW.
If you go to this page, then scroll down to ‘Transactional’ then ‘Comment Reply’, does the explanation given match what you’re experiencing?

Is it normal behaviour? I don’t think so. When you reply guests’ comments as the artical author, the comments author can not received the notifications. Meanwhile, others (except the author of the article) reply the comments, the notifications will send. It’s ridiculous，isn’t it? Now in order to solve this problem, I have to change the author to another user I owned. This problem didn’t occur until I updated BNFW. I hope it can be solved.

As far as I’m aware, this is standard behaviour within WordPress. BNFW, in this scenario, just allows you to override these comment notifications.

As far as I’m aware, no changes made to BNFW in the last update that should have caused any issues with comment notifications but if you’re happy to try an older version to see if it’s the same for you, then you can do so by going to this page and downloading the previous version.

Now I have to change author of my all articals to a new account. Because when I am not author, my reply can be mailed to the comment author. I still think that it is not a standard behaviour. Why the artical author’s comment reply will not be sent to the commment parent author. I can’t think about it so far.

Are you able to outline what behaviour you’re expecting to see vs what you are seeing?
It would be helpful if you could outline this for both BNFW as well as the default WordPress behaviour. This will help me to troubleshoot and see if there’s an issue.

I make an example. First, I am a artical author. A guest left a comment in this artical. And I replied him. But guest could’t receive the notice. When I changed a new account (I have to creat a new WordPress account for myself) and replied him, I found that the notice had been sent. So why you set that don’t send the artical author’s reply.

In a simple way, The comment author can’t receive the notice about artical author’s reply.And he can receive the notice about other’s reply normally.

So that suggests to me that something is conflicting in your set-up as BNFW should be able to handle that.

yes, Though I changing the option ‘Enable threaded (nested) comments ‘X’ levels deep’ to ‘2’. The problem still exists. And My three websites heve the same problem. And this problem had not existed half a year until this month.

Does it work if you set the comment levels to 1 level as per the documentation?

I tested it 10min ago. the problem is still exists. When I change the author of artical to anothor account And reply. The notification send immediately. this is test artical https://www.tamersunion.net/testartical/#comment-1223. When the artical author is Hanada, Hanada reply Hanadalee, notification isn’t sent. But When the artical author is tamersunion(the thrid accoundt).Hanada reply Hanadalee,notification is sent.

The second reply has notification to hanadalee because hanada is not artical author.

Yes. When the post author himself reply the comments, it didn’t work.

Ok, so if I understand correctly:

BNFW works as expected with regards to comments except for when the original post author is changed. In this situation, the original post author doesn’t receive New Comment OR Comment Reply notifications – is this correct?
