JP + development site (passworded)?

    I’m working on a new version of our site.
    In order to hide it from search engines (and curious visitors), I have it password-protected.

    Problem is, Jetpack won’t connect, saying the site must be publicly accessible.

    How do people handle using Jetpack on development sites?

    Is there a way to get around the password?
    Do you simply not use Jetpack until the site is published?
    Is there some other workaround?
