Ajax Search and Progressive Web Apps (offline)

    Thanks for a wonderful plugin. It runs out “how to sort your garbage” site at https://sortering.sonfor.dk/

    Users have requested an app-like experience, so I’ve started experimenting with PWA – Progressive Web App’s (well I installed the plugin)…

    It works well! However, if OFFLINE, the site/app still works with every page cached – that the intented nature of PWA’s as I understand it… BUT – Ajax Search obviously won’t find anything, as there is no connection to the database.

    The result is a perpetual spinning wheel.

    Do you have any idea how to handle this situation? Maybe a Ajax search timeout error or something?

    Hi Bjarne,

    That is a really neat plugin, I just checked it out. This is a fairly new thing to me, but I like the initiative.

    Well, obviously the search will not work without connection, and currently ajax related errors are not outputted anywhere.

    I think the best solution would be, that in the upcoming release I add a ‘fail’ handler, that outputs the error message to the results box in a readable format, if any, as you suggested. That is probably the most I can do.

    A (maybe configurable) timeout and an error message would be a viable solution for me. Ajax Search Lite, the website and my host, delivers search results within a second or so – I’m very satisfied with that performance. So personally, I’d give it a 5 second timeout and then notify the user that an internet connection is needed.

    I’m not even sure the problem arises in real life – I guess, if you use my “app”, you’ll probably have a mobile data connection anyway, but you never know ??
