Don’t know how the short-codes work

I am accessing WordPress through GoDaddy. I know nothing about shortcodes, etc. I want to add the calendar to my home page but I put [spiffy-calendar] in the text area of the row/column thingie and I just see the text. The calendar doesn’t show up. I wish this stuff was simple plug-and-play, but WP is a nightmare for me.

My website is obviously not live and I can’t upload a screen capture.
