Settings

You can find the settings page in your Dashboard -> Settings -> Encyclopedia.

Template files

All plugin outputs can be changed via user defined HTML templates. Just put the templates you want to overwrite inside your theme folder (no matter if parent theme or child theme). You can find the default templates in the plugin folder in “templates/”. You can find a list of the available template files in documentation of the pro version. Please do not modify the original templates! You would lose all your modifications when updating the plugin!

Limitations of the lite version

The most features are available but you cannot select every option. You will find a small notice for each unavailable option on the settings page. The lite version contains advertisements for third-party services and products.

Installation

Minimum Requirements

• WordPress 5.5 or greater
• PHP version 7.1 or greater; PHP 8 is strongly recommended!
• MySQL version 5.6 or MariaDB 10 or greater

Automatic installation

Automatic installation is the easiest option as WordPress handles the file transfers itself and you do not need to leave your web browser. To do an automatic install of Encyclopedia, log in to your WordPress dashboard, navigate to the Plugins menu and click “Add New”.

In the search field type “Encyclopedia” and click “Search Plugins”. Once you have found this plugin you can view details about it such as the point release, rating and description. Most importantly of course, you can install it by simply clicking “Install now”.

Manual installation

The manual installation method involves downloading the plugin and uploading it to your web server via your favorite FTP application. The WordPress codex contains instructions on how to do this here.

Updating

Automatic updates should work like a charm; as always though, ensure you backup your site just in case.

FAQ

How do I embed the archive page in my website?

Go to Design -> Menus and open the Encyclopedia box. Switch to the “View All” tab. There you can find the index page you can add to the menu of your choice.

How do I create relations between my Encyclopedia items?

To create relations between your items you need to classify your items by using tags.

Can Encyclopedia display and sort items in other than Latin characters?

Yes, Encyclopedia can handle every existing character. All strings are handled as UTF-8. So it works for Arabian, Russian, Chinese, Turkish, and all other UTF-8 compliant languages.

Is it possible to search for Encyclopedia items only?

Yes, it is. For this purpose place the “Encyclopedia Search” Widget in a sidebar of your choice. The search result will display Encyclopedia items only.

What can I do when I have problems with installing or setting up the Encyclopedia?

First of all read the installation guide on this site. Follow the guide step by step. If you do so and still have problems, there could be an incompatibility with another plugin: Deactivate all other plugins, try to install/set up Encyclopedia again. If it works re-activate plugin by plugin again to see which one causes the problem. If you need personal assistance or coaching or if you want me to install and set up Encyclopedia on your website, please contact me via support form on my website (this is a business service and you need to buy the support package to make use of it).

Does Encyclopedia display tooltips when hovering linked items in my contents?

Maybe: The linked encyclopedia items have a title tag which displays the excerpt of the description. If you hover it with your mouse you can see it. If your theme supports tooltips it will show the description as tooltip. If you need this implemented please use my support form.

Probably works for some uses – make it your last resort

Couldn’t do enough with the demo version as categories didn’t do anything. Surprisingly, the full version also doesn’t do anything with categories. Shortcodes are not documented. No online examples to see different ways of configuring the look. No way to ask for a refund without sending a tech support email….which tells you that asking for tech support means you can’t give a refund! Pretty cute. Paid version seems less useful than free versions of other products

Great Plugin if it would work – Worst Support I ever saw

I bought the plugin 2 years ago and it worked fine. This time I baught it and it threw a fatal error. I contacted the customer support by filling out a detailled form, everything that was needed to check the system as well as created a user account for them to troubleshoot. The contact form states that if you miss out a field they would charge you. The paypal t&cs of them states if you want a refund they going to invoice you (more than the plugin is worth). After writing the fourth email by requesting a refund since plugin doesnt work as well as there was no answer to my previous emails, the developer got back to me in a nearly harassing way, telling me they closed the ticket. I never got any notification or clarification. Use the plugin in the lite version, as long as it doesn’t break your site. But be careful when thinking of purchasing the plugin.

Das Encyclopedia Plugin nutzen wir seit über 10 Jahren in der Pro Version. In dieser Zeit hat sich bei WordPress extrem viel getan, dieses Plugin ist ein m?chtiges Werkzeug und der Entwickler Dennis Hoppe leistet hier wirklich einen erstklassigen Support. WordPress Plugins sind leider ein Stück Software das nicht so sauber gekapselt ist wie andere Konzepte, so dass Seiteneffekte leider nicht ausgeschlossen sind. Unsere Erfahrung ist, dass wenn bei diesem Plugin mal ein Fehler auftritt, der Entwickler diesen nicht nur umgehend beseitigt, sondern auch pers?nlich zeitnah reagiert.

Nach einem der letzten Updates wurde die Light-Version offenbar um etliche vorher zug?ngliche Einstellm?glichkeiten beraubt! ?? Ohne jede Vorwarnung. Ich finde das Euren langj?hrigen Alt-Kunden gegenüber — die auch durch ihre kostenlose Nutzung für Eure Entwicklung vorteilhaft (gewesen) sein dürften — extrem unfair. . Ich bin schwer entt?uscht und werde das Plugin nicht mehr weiter empfehlen. . Zus?tzlich war auf unserer Webseite eine Zeit lang keine ?nderung von Posts und Pages m?glich. Fehlermeldung beim Versuch ?nderungen zu speichern muss in etwa gewesen sein: “Aktualisierung fehlgeschlagen. Die Antwort ist keine gültige JSON-Antwort.” (nach Deaktivierung des Plugins Encyclopedia light war der Fehler sofort verschwunden, bei erneuter Aktivierung ist er jetzt verschwunden) . Als Zugabe-Bonus gab es dann eine endlose Liste ungültiger interner Links, da die Einstellungen “übersichtsseiten-URL-Slug” und “Element URL-Slug” auf den Standardwert “enzyklopaedie” zurückgesetzt wurde, der jetzt in der Light-Version NICHT MEHR ZU ?NDERN IST! ?????? . So etwas m?chte kein Website-Betreibender nach einem Plugin-Update sehen.??
