These templates control the layout of the posts, pages, or page types on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e5f5fa\">The Template Editor is <strong>only<\/strong> available if your site is using a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\">block theme<\/a> or a classic theme that has enabled the Template Editor on the backend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Templates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WordPress uses templates to create the layout and structure for posts, pages, or specific page types on your site page. There are a few base templates that are generated when you select a theme.&nbsp;For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Home<\/strong>&nbsp;template is used to display the site&#8217;s home page if your site is set up to display the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/settings-reading-screen\/#reading-settings\">latest posts <\/a>on the home page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Index <\/strong>template is used to display the index page of all the blog posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Page<\/strong>&nbsp;template is used to display the site&#8217;s pages if no specific templates are assigned to the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many block themes offer other built-in templates like the&nbsp;<strong>Single Post<\/strong>&nbsp;template to customize the layout of single blog posts, the&nbsp;<strong>404<\/strong>&nbsp;template to customize the layout of the&nbsp;404 error page, the <strong>Search<\/strong> template to customize the layout of the search results page, and the&nbsp;<strong>Archive<\/strong>&nbsp;template for categories\/archives page, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, your <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\">block theme<\/a> may come bundled with custom templates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Template Editor, you can find all the templates on your site, including any custom templates you created and the ones that came bundled with your theme. You can edit these templates and create custom layouts using <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\">blocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e5f5fa\">When you make changes to a template, the editor updates the blocks on all pages\/posts that use the template. These changes take precedence&nbsp;over your theme\u2019s bundled template files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-access-this-feature\">What you need, to use the Template Editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To work with the Template Editor, you need to use a<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\">block theme<\/a> on your site. A block theme is a theme that uses <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284652\">blocks<\/a> for all parts of a site, including navigation menus, header, content, and site footer.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\">blocks<\/a> that are available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\">WordPress Block editor<\/a> can be used in the Template Editor. To find block themes, from the WordPress dashboard, go to <strong>Appearance<\/strong> &gt;  <strong>Themes<\/strong> and click <strong>Add New<\/strong>. In the <strong>Add Themes<\/strong> page, select <strong>Block Themes<\/strong> to find the growing list of <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"15113575\">Block themes<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/themes\/tags\/full-site-editing\/\">WordPress theme directory<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-17-at-9.36.15-AM-2-1024x493.png\" alt=\"How to find a block theme\" class=\"wp-image-16107129\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">How to find a block theme<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you install and activate a Block theme on your site, go to <strong>Appearance<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Editor<\/strong> to open the Site Editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-find-this-feature\">Two ways to access the Template Editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two different ways you can access the Template Editor depending on what type of theme you are using:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are using a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"15113575\">block theme<\/a>, you can access the Template Editor when editing posts or pages via the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284616\">WordPress Block Editor<\/a> and also via the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/site-editor\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/site-editor\/\">Site Editor<\/a>.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are using a classic theme that has enabled the Template Editor on the backend, you can access the Template Editor only when editing posts or pages via the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284616\">WordPress Block Editor<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-edit-templates-via-the-post-editor\">How to use the Template Editor via the WordPress Block Editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e5f5fa\">To use the Template Editor via the WordPress Block Editor, make sure your site is using a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-themes\/\">block theme<\/a> or a classic theme that has enabled the Template Editor on the backend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To edit a template <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <strong>Posts<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add New<\/strong> to add a new post or <strong>Pages<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add New<\/strong> to add a new page. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This opens the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284616\">WordPress Block Editor<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/settings-sidebar\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"13714281\">Post\/Page Settings<\/a> sidebar tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the <strong>Summary<\/strong> section, click the name of the template. A popup will appear. Make sure to give it a descriptive name that describes the purpose of the template e.g. &#8220;Full Width&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Create<\/strong> to open the Template Editor and go to the template editing mode where you can build the custom template using <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284652\">blocks<\/a>.
